HJI advances systemic justice reform by working alongside policymakers, agencies, legal experts, and community leaders to reshape how society addresses harm, accountability, and healing.

Our advocacy efforts focus on:

• Second-chance legislation and sentencing reform

• Prison culture change grounded in relational accountability, safety, and purpose

• Diversion initiatives that address trauma and root causes rather than punishment alone

• Reentry policies that remove barriers to housing, employment, and full restoration

• Amplifying the voices of those directly impacted by the system through storytelling, research, and community engagement

We believe change doesn’t just come from the top down—but also from the inside out. Our lived experience team, policy collaborators, and research partners work to build a justice system that protects without dehumanizing and restores without excusing.

Impact Goals: Long-term reductions in recidivism, increased public safety, and a shift from punitive to restorative systems of justice.
